A small part with a surprisingly useful function: The Tanabe Cooling Plate optimizes airflow behind the front of the GR86 and ensures that the available airflow is used more effectively for cooling.
Tanabe analyzed the airflow in the front area of the GR86 using methods including smoke testing. This revealed that some of the incoming air is directed underneath the AC condenser as standard, rather than flowing effectively through the condenser and water radiator. The Cooling Plate seals exactly this area and forces the air more precisely through the existing radiator surfaces.
Additionally, the plate is angled three-dimensionally and directs a portion of the air specifically upwards towards the air filter box. In Tanabe's internal measurements, an air velocity increase of 0.7 m/s was recorded there.
As such, the Cooling Plate is not just a dress-up part, but a simple way to meaningfully improve the GR86's stock airflow – particularly interesting for vehicles driven sportily and for track day use.
